Established as Family-Friendly Spaces, Attendance Up 40% Over Expectations
Three water playgrounds established by Seongbuk District in Seoul (Mayor Seungro Lee) to help residents cope with the heat have emerged as popular summer destinations in the area.
According to Seongbuk District on August 24, approximately 27,000 people have visited the water playgrounds at Jangseok, Kkum Nara, and Odong Neighborhood Parks since their opening in July, which is more than 40% higher than the initial estimate.

Seongbuk District opened the water playgrounds sequentially starting in early July, attracting 10,000 visitors to Jangseok Children's Park, 7,000 to Kkum Nara Children's Park, and 10,000 to Odong Neighborhood Park. The district stated, "We often saw children expressing disappointment at closing time because they wanted to play longer," highlighting the enthusiastic response from residents.
In particular, the water playgrounds have become intergenerational leisure spaces enjoyed not only by children but also by parents and grandparents. The constant presence of safety personnel, convenient facilities such as showers and changing rooms, as well as exercise equipment and rest areas for seniors, have all contributed to their popularity by making them accessible and comfortable for all family members.
The water playground project in Seongbuk District parks has been promoted since last year as part of the district's signature "On-site Mayor's Office" initiative during the 7th and 8th terms of the local administration, actively reflecting suggestions made directly by residents to Mayor Seungro Lee.
Mayor Seungro Lee said, "We are steadily implementing various projects that allow residents to enjoy healing, fun, and culture close to home," adding, "I am grateful to the Seongbuk District staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes this summer to make the water playgrounds, which bring together all generations and foster family-friendly outcomes, a success."
Based on the results of this year's operation, Seongbuk District plans to continue expanding family-friendly water playgrounds next year. The three water playgrounds will remain open until August 31.
