Governor Kim Youngrok Seeks Solutions to Population Decline On-Site Kim Youngrok Jeonnam Governor

Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, visited Singi Village in Jindo on the 22nd, a community at the forefront of responding to the population decline crisis by implementing village income projects and increasing the resident population. He held a roundtable discussion with residents to listen to their concerns and explore policy directions tailored to the region.

Singi Village was selected for the Fishing Village New Deal 300 project in 2021, which enabled the construction of the Singi Vitality Center and the improvement of fishing port facilities, thereby establishing essential village infrastructure. As an income project, the village developed the "Premium Singihada Eomuk," a fish cake made using lively mullet from Uldolmok.

In 2023, the village operated a two-week residency program called "Urbanites Become Jeonnam Fishermen," promoting the appeal of island life in Jeonnam and taking the lead in increasing the resident population.

Additionally, Singi Village was selected as a pilot village for Jeonnam Province’s first-in-the-nation experiential hometown donation return gift program. The village is currently undergoing consulting to enhance its experience programs. After the consulting is completed, the final selection will be determined by the Jeonnam Province Return Gift Selection Committee.

At the roundtable held at the Singi Vitality Center, more than 50 residents attended and shared various opinions on everyday inconveniences and ideas for village development.

The head of the Singi Village fishing community and residents submitted two requests: support for manufacturing facilities for the "Premium Singihada Eomuk" and dredging of sediment in the harbor without restrictions. In response, Governor Kim stated, "The province will pursue this as a certified project and will actively consider providing facility support." In addition, a wide range of opinions were exchanged, from everyday civil complaints to measures for revitalizing the village.

Governor Kim said, "Singi Village is an open community leading the way in addressing the population decline crisis. Through this roundtable, it was meaningful to hear firsthand about the development of income projects using lively mullet from Uldolmok and efforts to attract new residents."

He added, "If every village responds to the population decline crisis by welcoming and accepting newcomers as actively as Singi Village, more people will be drawn to Jeonnam. Jeonnam Province will do its utmost to usher in the 'Era of Jeonnam' by continuously attracting new residents and improving the quality of life for our communities."
