It is a daunting task for HR managers at large corporations and public institutions to read and evaluate the self-introduction letters of tens of thousands of job applicants one by one. This is because applicants may directly copy successful self-introduction letters found online, or submit content generated by ChatGPT. The interview process is also challenging, as it is difficult to determine what questions to ask candidates and who would be the most suitable hire. Muhayu, an artificial intelligence (AI) company established in 2011, has developed AI solutions that automate recruitment processes and analyze results in real time. Since these solutions reduce the burden of traditionally labor-intensive recruitment work, companies have welcomed them. This year, the number of companies that adopted Muhayu's AI interview service 'Monster' has more than tripled compared to 2023.

In a recent interview with Asia Economy, Muhayu CEO Dongho Shin said, "I believed that systematizing interviews with AI technology could resolve the problems companies face during recruitment," adding, "Since the vocabulary usable in interview settings is limited, we enhanced the quality of speech-to-text (STT) recognition in interview environments through fine-tuning."

A reporter personally tried out Monster, the non-face-to-face AI interview service conducted via computer video. After answering questions within a set time, the service analyzed whether the content of the answers, as well as the applicant's posture and attitude, were appropriate. Monster also generated customized questions on the spot based on the applicant's self-introduction letter. For interview evaluation, Monster uses its proprietary 'competency molecule model' to assess more than ten competencies required for work, such as expertise, strategic thinking, problem-solving ability, sense of responsibility, and sincerity, and calculates a total score reflecting how well the applicant possesses these qualities. This approach has helped reduce concerns about bias, which had been pointed out as a side effect of conventional AI interviews. CEO Shin stated, "Because we evaluate abilities that are actually necessary for work, we are confident that Monster is suitable for selecting talent."

After studying AI at university and building experience in the field of search technology, CEO Shin focused on 'document review' from the early days of the business. The 'Copykiller' service, which detects plagiarism in academic papers and assignments written by ChatGPT, has established a unique position in Korea and continues to serve as a cash cow. Muhayu has since expanded into HR and recruitment, launching the AI self-introduction analysis service 'Prism' and the AI interview service 'Monster,' both of which have received positive responses in the market. Clients include Kumho Petrochemical, Korea Road Traffic Authority, Korea Land and Housing Corporation, and Tony Moly. CEO Shin commented, "As experience with AI has increased recently, customers' resistance to AI interviews has decreased, and expectations for automation have grown."

In order to incorporate the expertise of recruiters and interviewers into Monster, Muhayu has focused on 'people,' conducting direct interviews with these professionals. CEO Shin explained, "Rather than becoming excessively technology-oriented, we focused on understanding human expertise and intelligence to build our AI." In addition to developers, the company employs many specialists in Korean language and literature and library and information science, as it is essential to have people who can skillfully handle text and evaluate language style.

Muhayu received a 15 billion won pre-IPO (pre-listing equity investment) in 2023 and surpassed 10 billion won in sales last year. The company is aiming to go public in the second half of next year. Recently, Muhayu established a branch in Japan, laying the groundwork for global expansion. CEO Shin predicted, "As Korean companies are moving their production bases from China to Southeast Asia and hiring hundreds of employees, using Monster for interviews could help reduce the burden of recruitment work for these companies."
