Local Tax Reductions to Ease Financial Burden on Residents Affected by Heavy Rains
Hapcheon County in South Gyeongsang Province announced on August 21 that it will implement local tax reductions to ease the tax burden on property damaged by the heavy rains in July, following its designation as a special disaster zone.
According to the current Restriction of Special Local Taxation Act, local governments are required to reduce local taxes on property damaged by disasters in special disaster zones after obtaining approval from the local council. In response, the Hapcheon County Council, considering the urgency of the matter, convened an extraordinary session and swiftly approved the proposal for county tax reductions.
Those eligible for the reduction are owners of property that suffered damage from the heavy rains, as confirmed by the National Disaster Information System or a certificate of damage. The tax items subject to reduction are the 2025 property tax and automobile tax.
The reductions will be carried out either ex officio or upon application. If local taxes have already been paid, refunds will be issued. For property tax (land) scheduled to be levied in September, tax bills will be sent after ex officio reductions. For property tax on houses and buildings, which was already levied in July, refunds will be processed at a later date.
County Governor Kim Yuncheol stated, "We will do our utmost to provide support, including tax reductions, to help ease the financial burden on residents affected by the heavy rains."
