University of Seoul to Build New Biomedical Building
Ewha Womans University to Construct and Expand Ewha West Campus
The campuses of University of Seoul and Ewha Womans University will be transformed through facility expansions and new constructions.
On August 21, the city announced that it had held the 13th Urban Planning Committee meeting and approved with amendments the proposed changes to the detailed facility development plans for the urban planning facilities (schools) at University of Seoul and Ewha Womans University.
Under this decision, the existing dormitory at University of Seoul will be expanded in connection with the current International Hall, adding approximately 9,000 square meters and 150 rooms. With this expansion, the dormitory will be able to accommodate 1,630 students, which is 460 more than before. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2027, with completion targeted for 2029.

A new biomedical building with a floor area of 13,000 square meters will also be constructed. To provide educational spaces for advanced industries, a smart greenhouse, community center, and startup support center will be located adjacent to facilities for related departments in advanced fields. Construction of the biomedical building is scheduled to begin in 2034.
The city will also reorganize the green conservation area by creating a park linked to the walking trails within Baebongsan Neighborhood Park. The new park will be open to local residents and is expected to become a space for communication and mutual growth between the university and the local community.
Ewha Womans University will newly construct and expand the Ewha West Campus to increase educational space for new advanced departments. The height restrictions in the natural landscape district will be eased, and the campus will be developed with a total floor area of 68,000 square meters.
Helen Hall, currently used by the College of Nursing, will be reborn as the Ewha Advanced Library, preserving the original columns and entrance to maintain its historical value as a modern building, and restoring the fa?ade to its original form. A complex smart academic information center will be created, connecting the new library with the existing central library, increasing the number of reading seats and providing a convergence learning space centered on digital resources. The Ewha Advanced Library is scheduled for completion in January 2029, and the Ewha West Campus in January 2030, with both projects set to begin construction simultaneously in August 2027.
A Seoul city official stated, "We expect that the decision to change the urban planning facilities will not only secure an educational foundation for advanced fields at the universities, but also serve as an opportunity for the universities to proactively establish a foundation for mutual growth and cooperation with the local community."
