A development project to establish cancer treatment centers and other facilities in abandoned mining areas such as Samcheok and Taebaek in Gangwon Province has passed the government's preliminary feasibility study (pre-feasibility study). With the Yongin~Gwacheon underground expressway construction plan exempted from the pre-feasibility study, the project is expected to gain momentum.
The Ministry of Strategy and Finance announced on the 20th that a total of seven projects, including economic revitalization and development projects for early-closed mining areas such as Samcheok, Taebaek, and Hwasun, passed the pre-feasibility study at the Fiscal Project Evaluation Committee chaired by Second Vice Minister Lim Gi Geun.
On the site of the Samcheok Dogye Mining Office, a heavy ion accelerator cancer treatment center and an 80-bed “All Care Center” will be established. This is expected to contribute to the transition to a health, medical, and wellness-centered industry and to strengthen the region’s medical infrastructure.
On the site of the Jangseong Mining Office in Taebaek, Korea’s first clean methanol production and logistics base and a core mineral industrial complex will be created. The Hwasun Mining Office site in Hwasun will be developed into an agro-industrial complex and a smart farm complex.
In addition, the construction of the new Geoje-Tongyeong Expressway (20.9 km, four lanes in both directions), the establishment of the National Marine and Fisheries Museum in Wando, Jeollanam-do, the construction of a branch of the Asan Police Hospital in Chungcheongnam-do, and the expansion of National Route 15 (Goheung~Bongrae) have all passed the pre-feasibility study threshold.
The new Geoje-Tongyeong Expressway project will invest a total of 1.5 trillion won to build a 20.9 km, four-lane expressway from Yongnam-myeon in Tongyeong to Sangmun-dong in Geoje, making it the only city with a population of over 200,000 without an expressway. Construction is scheduled to begin between 2028 and 2029, with the goal of opening in 2035.
The Gyeongsangnam-do provincial government analyzed that, once the newly approved section is completed, travel time between Tongyeong and Geoje during peak hours will be reduced from 34 minutes to 14 minutes.
At this committee meeting, six new projects, including the Yongin~Gwacheon underground expressway construction, were selected as new pre-feasibility study subjects.
The Yongin~Gwacheon underground expressway project involves building new underground four-lane roads along both the Suwon~Yongin section of the Yeongdong Expressway and the Suwon~Gwacheon expressway. The purpose is to alleviate chronic congestion in the southern metropolitan area.
Additionally, projects such as the expansion of the Changwon~Jinyeong Expressway, construction of the Bongo~Gyeongmyeong congestion road, modernization of the Noeun Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market, and remodeling of the Arko Arts Theater in Seoul were also selected as pre-feasibility study subjects.
The so-called “New Daedongyeojido Mapping Project,” which aims to produce and utilize high-precision 3D terrain and building data for the entire country, was also selected as a pre-feasibility study subject.
