Jung Heewon's YouTube channel on premature aging

On August 19, Professor Lee appeared on the YouTube channel "Jung Heewon's Low-Grade Aging," run by Jung Heewon, the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Chief Health Officer, who is known as "Low-Grade Aging Teacher." He explained, "The key point is not to drink too much water," and added, "There is no need to be obsessed with the figure of 2 liters."

Previously, on the August 6 episode of "You Quiz," Professor Lee mentioned, "People who drink a lot of water may actually feel dizzy or fatigued," and "If someone with a weak heart continues this habit over a long period, it could become dangerous." This statement spread online and was interpreted as "drinking more than 2 liters of water a day is dangerous," sparking debate within the medical community.

"You should adjust your intake to your situation, not a fixed amount"

Regarding this, Professor Lee pointed out, "We also consume fluids through food," and said, "Obsessively trying to reach 2 liters late at night or drinking until your urine is clear-these compulsive habits are the real issue." He added, "You should drink when you feel thirsty," and emphasized, "Especially for the elderly, who may not feel thirst as easily, or for those with certain illnesses or taking specific medications, fluid regulation can be difficult. Rather than obsessively trying to meet a fixed amount, it is important to adjust according to your situation."

Jung Heewon, the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Chief Health Officer, had previously mentioned Professor Lee's statement and pointed out that it could create unnecessary fear regarding healthy eating habits, leading to controversy over whether Jung was targeting Professor Lee. Addressing this, Jung clarified, "I do not target anyone. I simply aim to prevent exaggerated or insufficiently supported information from spreading and to help people maintain a balanced perspective on healthy eating habits."

The key point: "It's about protecting your health"

Ultimately, the main takeaway from this controversy is the importance of moving away from an obsession with a specific amount and instead consuming an appropriate amount of water according to one's individual lifestyle and physical condition. Both Professor Lee and Chief Officer Jung concluded, "The goal is for everyone to protect their health in a way that suits their own body," and added, "We would be honored if we have helped citizens develop healthy lifestyle habits."
