Recently, Yahoo US published a ranking of the "Most Unfriendly Countries," based on travelers' reviews shared on social networking services (SNS).
The 'Hidden Variable' of Travel... Local Attitudes
Turkey ranked fifth. One traveler shared an experience of ordering a cup of tea at Istanbul Airport, only to be met with a "blank, unresponsive expression." There was even a comment stating, "Turkey is always mentioned in discussions about unfriendly countries."
China came in fourth. In particular, Beijing was frequently cited for its blunt and impatient attitudes. While one traveler found such behavior amusing and considered it part of the local color, most reported struggling with cultural shock.
Russia was ranked third. As the saying goes, "Smiling on the street is seen as suspicious," and the country's cold demeanor led to perceptions of unfriendliness. However, some who had lived there for a long time countered, saying, "People are warm once you start a conversation." This suggests that the stern impression is not the whole story.
Morocco took second place. There were reports of children being subjected to unwanted physical contact or buses being pelted with stones. Many travelers also complained about persistent touting. A large number of visitors said, "I never want to go back."

France was the overwhelming number one. In Paris, in particular, many recounted being ignored when speaking English, or having their French pronunciation corrected without being given directions. On domestic online communities, similar stories abound: "They didn't bring the menu for over an hour, so I just left," "Not taking orders is standard," "Traveling in France only ruins your mood despite the cost," and "Never go to Paris."
