Chamber Music Masterpieces with Myung-Whun Chung and Friends
Performances in Seoul on November 25
Also touring Gangneung, Bucheon, Gimhae, and Daegu
Featuring Mozart, Beethoven's "Ghost," and Brahms
Maestro Myung-Whun Chung will present a chamber music performance as a pianist, together with cellist Jian Wang, with whom he has shared a long-standing musical partnership. The stage will also feature violinist Inmo Yang, a rising star attracting global attention, and violist Dimitri Murrath.
On August 20, concert planning agency Credia announced that a concert centered around Myung-Whun Chung, featuring a variety of chamber music performances, will take place at the Concert Hall of the Seoul Arts Center on November 25. Prior to the Seoul concert, performances are scheduled for November 20 at Gangneung Arts Center, November 21 at Bucheon Art Center, November 22 at Gimhae Arts and Sports Center, and November 23 at Daegu Concert House.
Myung-Whun Chung was recently appointed music director of the world-renowned opera house La Scala in Italy, further solidifying his reputation as a conductor. In this concert, however, he will appear not as a conductor but as a pianist. Despite his long-standing career as a conductor, he has consistently performed chamber music on the world stage.
Jian Wang is recognized as the "most successful Asian cellist," having been the first Asian to sign an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. He is also one of Myung-Whun Chung's most frequent collaborators in chamber music. Together, Chung and Wang have demonstrated deep musical chemistry through projects such as the recording of Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time," performances of Beethoven's Triple Concerto, and numerous chamber and concerto appearances. In September 2023, Jian Wang also performed at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall with violinist Kyung-Wha Chung, Myung-Whun Chung's sister, as part of the Chung Trio concert.
Violinist Inmo Yang, who will join this performance, became the first Korean to win both the Paganini Competition and the Sibelius Competition, earning international acclaim. Belgian-born violist Dimitri Murrath won first prize at the Primrose International Viola Competition. He has served as a viola professor at the New England Conservatory and is currently a professor of viola and head of the chamber music department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
The first part of the concert will feature Mozart's Violin Sonata No. 21 and Beethoven's Piano Trio No. 5, known as the "Ghost." Mozart's sonata is noted for its concise yet lyrical beauty, while Beethoven's trio is well-known for its dramatic tension and lyricism. In the second part, Brahms' Piano Quartet No. 3, the "Werther," will be performed. Inspired by literature, this piece is characterized by its intensity and profound sorrow.
Tickets for the concert can be reserved starting on August 21 through Club Balcony, Nol Ticket, and the Seoul Arts Center.
