LG Electronics Targets Future Vehicles with 'Top-Level' Cybersecurity Certification

Vietnam Production Base, LG's Largest Automotive Electronics Facility
Demonstrates Top-Level 'Level 3' Security Capabilities

LG Electronics has strengthened its cybersecurity management system for automotive electronics in response to the shift toward future vehicles. Following the achievement of top-level vehicle cybersecurity management system certification by its largest automotive electronics production base in Vietnam, the company plans to expand these security capabilities to its major global manufacturing facilities.

On August 20, LG Electronics announced that its Haiphong manufacturing facility in Vietnam recently obtained Level 3 Vehicle Cybersecurity Management System (CSMS) certification from TUV Rheinland, an internationally accredited testing and certification body. The Haiphong facility, which is the largest production base for automotive electronics, manufactures most of the components supplied to major global clients for infotainment and telematics. LG Electronics emphasized that this certification demonstrates its industry-leading, differentiated security capabilities.

The CSMS system rigorously verifies the application of cybersecurity throughout the entire lifecycle of vehicles and automotive electronics, from planning and development to production, operation, and after-sales management, based on international standards. As software-defined vehicles (SDVs) rapidly emerge as a new market leading the next-generation mobility industry, such cybersecurity management systems have become essential capabilities for both automakers and automotive electronics manufacturers.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) officially enacted cybersecurity regulations (UNECE R-155) in 2021. As a result, since July of last year, only vehicles certified with a cybersecurity management system can be released in 56 countries across the European Union, Asia, Oceania, and Africa. The United States, China, and other countries are also expanding related regulations.

LG Electronics particularly highlighted that this is the first case in which a company, after demonstrating Level 2 CSMS security capabilities in advance, immediately obtained the higher Level 3 certification. TUV Rheinland grants Level 2 certification based on the establishment of a cybersecurity management system, and Level 3 certification if the system is actually applied to mass production.

LG Electronics has been strengthening its security capabilities across all areas of its automotive electronics business. After obtaining CSMS Level 2 certification for its headquarters and Pyeongtaek plant in 2023, the company achieved Level 3 certification within a year. Starting with the Haiphong facility, LG Electronics plans to expand cybersecurity management system certification to major global manufacturing sites in Mexico, Poland, and other locations.

Eun Seokhyun, Executive Vice President and Head of LG Electronics' VS Business Division, stated, "The core competitive edge in the SDV era is top-level vehicle cybersecurity capabilities," adding, "Based on this, we will further strengthen our leadership in the global automotive electronics market."
