Special Summer Volunteer Activities
at Iun Village, Tongyeong, August 12-14
The PKNU Student Volunteer Group of National Pukyong University (President Bae Sanghoon) held a special summer volunteer program, including filial piety services, in Tongyeong, Gyeongnam, from August 12 to 14, making use of the summer vacation period.
For three days, 23 student volunteers visited Iun Village in Tongyeong and organized a variety of programs, such as paired exercises, talent shows, serving lunch, and craft activities for the village elders, as well as painting the walls of the outdoor shelter.
Iun Village is a port village located away from the tourist center of Tongyeong. Several years ago, the university’s mural volunteer club, Jeolyeonghoe, painted a rainbow mural on the village’s breakwater as part of a volunteer project.
This year, the student volunteers revitalized the village by repainting the walls of the outdoor shelter and visited the village hall, where they prepared and served soybean noodle soup for the elders at the senior center.
Additionally, students and elders paired up to participate in paired exercises, make Taegukgi fans to commemorate Liberation Day, and decorate back scratchers, providing cultural experiences for the elders and creating opportunities for emotional exchange and intergenerational communication.
Lee Hanjin, a fourth-year student majoring in Next-Generation Semiconductor Engineering and a member of the PKNU Student Volunteer Group, said, "Although the work was physically demanding, from filial piety volunteering to mural painting, it was all the more rewarding and broadened my perspective on the local community."
The PKNU Student Volunteer Group at National Pukyong University is engaged in a wide range of volunteer activities on campus, in the local community, nationwide, and abroad, including social contribution, UN peace and veterans affairs, and SDGs initiatives.
