Governor Kim Youngrok: "Pilot Error Cited in Jeju Air Disaster, Core Suspicions Remain Unresolved" Kim Youngrok Jeollanamdo Governor

Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanamdo, has called on the government to conduct an objective and fair investigation into the Jeju Air disaster.

On August 19, through his Facebook page, Governor Kim stated, "It has been eight months since the 12·29 passenger plane disaster occurred. Muan Airport remains closed, and the suffering of the bereaved families has not ended."

He continued, "Many bereaved families are still unable to leave the relief tents inside the airport, enduring each day in the pain of losing their loved ones. The families have only one wish: to have the cause of the accident clearly revealed."

He also expressed his regret regarding the recently released government-level accident investigation results.

Governor Kim wrote, "The Accident Investigation Committee presented preliminary findings pointing to pilot error, but this has only deepened distrust by being perceived as a self-investigation, without addressing the core suspicions about the cause. Moreover, while 1 billion won was spent on the memorial service, there are concerns that only a 100 million won external contract was allocated for the crucial investigation of the concrete mound."

He added, "The bereaved families and the public cannot accept this approach. Various factors have been cited as possible causes of the disaster, including bird strikes and aircraft defects. Media outlets such as The New York Times and experts have identified the concrete mound at the end of the runway localizer as a decisive factor that exacerbated the accident."

He went on to say, "Therefore, the official investigation results on the concrete mound, which are scheduled to be announced soon, are extremely important. This announcement must reveal the full truth. The investigation results must be objective and fair, and include data-driven analysis."

Governor Kim emphasized, "Above all, there must be a detailed explanation that the bereaved families can accept. Only results that leave no doubts can bring closure to the families and restore public trust in the government. The government must also take responsibility and work thoroughly to uncover the truth and restore normal operations at Muan International Airport."
