The Seoul Performing Arts Company announced on August 19 that it will stage the new original musical "Jeon Uchi" at the CJ Towol Theater in the Seoul Arts Center from October 25 to November 2.
This fantasy spectacle is a modern reinterpretation of the mysterious and extraordinary deeds and legends left by Jeon Uchi, a real-life figure from the Joseon Dynasty during the reign of King Jungjong. Taking inspiration from Jeon Uchi, who used magic and sorcery to punish corrupt powers and save the people, the Seoul Performing Arts Company aims to pose the question, "What is justice?" and to invite contemporary audiences to reconsider the meaning of a true hero.
The script and lyrics are written by Kyung Minseon, known for works such as the play "The Armless Bride" and the media fusion performance "Danoji Hyang." The music is composed by Hwang Hojun, who has established a unique musical world by blending traditional Korean rhythms with modern sounds.
The production is directed by Lee Daewoong, who has previously directed musicals such as "Thrill Me," "Aranga," "Demian," "Let Me Fly," and the play "Ugly Man, Beautiful Woman."
Choreographer Jung Bokyung, who served as a judge on Mnet's "Stage Fighter," and world-renowned illusionist Lee Eungyeol, who will help create a magical stage that blurs the line between reality and fantasy, have joined the creative team.
Choi Kyunghwa, head of performance planning at the Seoul Performing Arts Company, stated, "As a national arts organization, the Seoul Performing Arts Company has consistently presented original musicals based on Korean themes, continuing to experiment with Korean-style performance formats. 'Jeon Uchi' is a work that reinterprets a narrative rooted in Korean folklore through the company's own unique and contemporary stage language. It will present new possibilities for a 'Korean-style superhero performance' that can be experienced through theatrical sensibility and analog stage aesthetics."
The role of Jeon Uchi, who punishes a corrupt world and stands with the common people, will be played by Seoul Performing Arts Company member Lee Hansu and Son Dongwoon of the group Highlight, who has appeared in musicals such as "Catch Me If You Can," "Sandglass," and "The Great Catsby."
Seoul Performing Arts Company member Choi Inhyeong will play Seohwadam, Jeon Uchi's mentor who guides him on the right path. The role of Gumiho, who helps clear Jeon Uchi's name and pursues the truth together, will be played by company member Lee Eunsol. The role of Okhwangsangje, the Jade Emperor obsessed with creating a perfect earthly world, will be performed by Geum Seunghoon.
