Hope Friend Korea Food for the Hungry International (Chairman Choi Changnam) announced on the 19th that it will launch the "Koryoin Chuseok Campaign" to support Koryoin families in Korea who experience loneliness and isolation during the holiday season, helping them have a warmer holiday.
The campaign sheds light on the realities faced by various Koryoin families through stories such as children who wish the holidays would end quickly, elders who feel even more isolated during the long holiday, and parents who are still unfamiliar with Korean holidays.
Funds raised through the campaign will be used to provide holiday food kits and gifts, as well as to support holiday events at Koryoin centers. Details on how to participate in the campaign can be found on the official website of Hope Friend Korea Food for the Hungry International.
Choi Changnam, Chairman of Hope Friend Korea Food for the Hungry International, said, "Koryoin families live with the pain of history and the complex challenges of modern society. They feel even more isolated and marginalized during the holidays," and added, "Through this campaign, we hope Koryoin families can feel warmth within the community and that this becomes a foundation for building a more inclusive society where we understand and support one another."
Koryoin are descendants of Koreans who were forcibly relocated from Russia's Primorsky Krai to Central Asia in 1937 under Stalin's deportation policy. They have settled in places such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Currently, about 110,000 Koryoin compatriots live in Korea, but they face multiple challenges, including language and cultural barriers, limited employment opportunities, and unstable residency status.
