Shifting the Burden of Trash to Delivery Drivers
Netizens Outraged by the Incident
With an increasing number of people putting trash or miscellaneous items into cooler bags used for fresh food delivery, many delivery drivers are facing headaches. This time, a courier driver shared a story of anger after a citizen secretly left trash in his delivery truck. On August 18, a post expressing outrage from a courier driver was uploaded to an online community. Mr. A, who identified himself as a current delivery driver, wrote, "After arriving at the logistics center and opening my truck, I found that someone had thrown trash inside."

After arriving at work, Mr. A noticed a white envelope in the delivery truck. Upon checking, it contained trash such as leftover chicken, empty canned drinks, and tteokbokki containers. Mr. A said, "There was no receipt. It seems like the person deliberately dumped the trash and tried not to leave any evidence." He added, "I plan to report this to the police, review CCTV footage, and find the person who carelessly opened someone else's truck and threw away trash."
The photos shared by Mr. A show two white envelopes filled with food waste left inside the truck. With the hot weather, the rapid spoilage of food could attract insects and cause foul odors. Netizens who read about the incident expressed their anger, saying, "Please make sure to catch the culprit and serve justice," "How much does a trash bag cost anyway? Saving that money won't buy you a building," "Opening a closed truck just to throw away trash is not normal," and "I was hoping for a positive twist since delivery drivers work hard in the heat, but this is just too much."
Shifting the Burden to Delivery Drivers: A Form of Power Abuse
Last July, a photo showing leftover food and trash filled inside a cooler bag used for fresh food delivery was also posted online, sparking outrage among netizens. In the photo posted by Mr. B, the cooler bag contained rice that usually comes with deliveries, leftover protein, frozen strawberries, and pizza sauce. Mr. B commented, "If you put these items in the bag to keep your purchases from melting or spoiling, you should return the bag properly. I can't understand why people behave like this," and added, "What do you think of delivery workers? Please take care of your own trash."

This is not the first time issues related to Coupang's Fresh Bag have come under scrutiny. Some people have even placed used baby diapers and recyclables in the Fresh Bag, which Coupang introduced to reduce single-use items. Furthermore, there are frequent cases where people leave the bags filled with trash at garbage dumps or in unknown locations, making it difficult for drivers to find them. Meanwhile, under the current Waste Management Act, those caught illegally dumping trash can be fined up to 1 million won. Additionally, causing damage to another person's property can result in up to three years of imprisonment or a fine of up to 7 million won.
