Trump on Possible U.S. Troop Deployment: "We Will Be Involved"
On August 18 (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump announced during a summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held at the White House that the United States would be involved in ensuring Ukraine's future security guarantees.
In response to reporters' questions regarding possible future security guarantees, including the potential stationing of U.S. troops in Ukraine, he stated, "Europe is the first line of defense, but we will help them," and added, "We will be involved."
President Trump, based on discussions with European leaders on the same day, reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing a peace agreement to achieve lasting peace, stating, "We will provide Ukraine with very good protection and security."
During the summit, President Trump planned to share and exchange views with President Zelensky on the Russian position confirmed during his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15. It is reported that the United States and Russia reached an agreement under which Ukraine would cede part of its territory to Russia, and in return, Russia would accept the United States and Europe providing NATO-style security guarantees to Ukraine. Immediately after the summit, President Trump urged President Zelensky to "agree" during an interview with Fox News, effectively pressuring him to accept Russia's demands.
After the meeting with President Zelensky, President Trump was scheduled to discuss ending the war in Ukraine through a series of meetings with European leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Mark Rutte, Secretary General of NATO, as well as the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Finland.
