Two Firefighters Die Battling Blaze
Next to Popular 'Ichiran Ramen' Spot
Frequented by Korean Tourists
A large fire broke out in Dotonbori, one of Osaka's most famous tourist destinations, resulting in the deaths of two firefighters. The incident has caused shock, as it occurred in the heart of a bustling district popular among Korean tourists and home to a renowned ramen restaurant.
According to NHK and other sources on August 18, the fire started at around 9:50 a.m. on the first floor of a seven-story building along the Dotonbori River in Chuo Ward, Osaka. The building is located right next to 'Ichiran Ramen Dotonbori Main Branch,' a spot frequently visited by Korean tourists, and the area is densely packed with businesses, including Mega Don Quijote and well-known takoyaki specialty shops.
Approximately 70 fire trucks were dispatched, and most of the flames were brought under control after about three hours. However, about 110 square meters, including surrounding buildings, were burned. During the firefighting efforts, one woman and five firefighters were taken to the hospital, and among them, two firefighters in their 50s and 20s ultimately died.
On social networking services (SNS), videos were posted showing black smoke and flames rising from the building next to the Ichiran Ramen sign. In some videos, store signs could be seen burned by the fire.
Ichiran Japan announced on X (formerly Twitter), "A fire broke out in the building adjacent to the Dotonbori Main Branch, but so far, there have been no confirmed injuries among customers or staff." The company added, "We are prioritizing safety and responding in cooperation with relevant authorities." They also stated, "The main branch will be temporarily closed," and "We deeply apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused to customers who planned to visit."
Local police and fire authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.
