First Insurance Payout for Electric Mobility Aid Users in Yangsan
City's Initiative Strengthens Safety Net for Persons with Disabilities and Seniors
Yangsan City, Gyeongnam, has reported its first insurance payout case under the "Safe Operation Insurance for Electric Mobility Aids for Persons with Disabilities and Seniors," which the city introduced in January this year to protect persons with disabilities and seniors using electric mobility aids such as electric wheelchairs and scooters from safety accidents.
This case involved a property damage accident in June, where a resident with a disability in Yangsan collided with the front bumper of a vehicle due to negligence while operating an electric mobility aid. The individual was able to receive assistance with property damage compensation through the insurance.
The "Safe Operation Insurance for Electric Mobility Aids for Persons with Disabilities and Seniors," which Yangsan City introduced for the first time this year, is an insurance product that provides up to 20 million KRW in coverage for third-party bodily injury and property damage liability occurring while operating electric mobility aids.
Through this initiative, the city aims to strengthen the safety net for socially vulnerable groups in transportation, specifically persons with disabilities and seniors. Eligible individuals include registered persons with disabilities and seniors aged 65 or older who reside in Yangsan City. There is no separate enrollment process, and the city fully covers the insurance premiums.
A city official stated, "We introduced this insurance to create a safe and reassuring environment for persons with disabilities and seniors," adding, "We will continue our efforts to support their right to mobility and alleviate their financial burden through ongoing assistance."
