Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, stated, "We will carry on the spirit of Kim Daejung and realize democracy once again in times of crisis."
On August 18, the 16th anniversary of former President Kim Daejung's passing, Governor Kim posted a tribute on his Facebook, saying, "Today marks the 16th anniversary since President Kim Daejung, a world-renowned political leader from Jeollanam-do, left us. I deeply respect and miss him."
Governor Kim emphasized, "President Kim was always at the center of major issues and devoted his entire life to justice, democracy, peace, and human rights," adding, "He lived a life like the indongcho flower, never compromising his convictions in the face of any adversity."
He continued, "Because he believed in the progress of history, he never lost his composure or sense of humor, even amid hardship and adversity. The President's noble life and spirit have become a beacon, illuminating the path we must take in every moment of crisis."
He went on to say, "Last winter, the entire nation became an 'active conscience,' serving as the driving force that prevented illegal emergency martial law and protected constitutional order. This June, the fourth democratic government, the Lee Jaemyung administration, was inaugurated. The era of genuine popular sovereignty, where the people are the true owners, has begun again, and the journey to restore inter-Korean peace and cooperation is underway."
Governor Kim added, "Jeollanam-do will take the lead in carrying on the President's noble spirit to build a nation where the dreams of justice, human rights, democracy, and unification can fully blossom."
Meanwhile, on this day, Jeollanam-do held a memorial ceremony at the Mokpo Kim Daejung Nobel Peace Prize Memorial Hall.
About 150 people attended the ceremony, including Governor Kim Youngrok, Jeonnam Superintendent of Education Kim Daejung, Acting Mokpo Mayor Cho Seokhoon, Jeonnam Provincial Council Vice Chair Lee Gwangil and council members, and Mokpo City Council Chair Cho Seongo.
