Police and fire authorities will conduct a joint inspection on August 18 to determine the cause of the apartment fire in Changjeon-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, which resulted in two deaths and thirteen injuries.
At around 10 a.m. on the same day, police and fire investigators plan to carry out an inspection to determine the exact ignition point and the cause of the fire. It has been reported that the bereaved family stated that an explosion occurred in a battery of an electric scooter that was charging in their son's room.
The previous day, at around 8:10 a.m., a fire broke out in an apartment in Changjeon-dong, resulting in the deaths of two residents and injuries to thirteen others. The deceased, a man in his 20s and a woman in her 60s, were mother and son. The son died at the scene, while the mother was transported to the hospital but later passed away. Additionally, 89 residents were evacuated in an emergency.
This apartment complex consists of 950 units and was completed in 1998. At that time, sprinkler installation was only mandatory for high-rise residential buildings with 16 floors or more, so the 14th floor, where the fire occurred, was not required to have sprinklers installed.
