President Trump made this announcement through his own social networking service (SNS), Truth Social, on the same day.

In another post, he said, "We had an excellent meeting in Alaska regarding Biden's (former President Joe Biden's) foolish war," claiming, "That war should never have happened."

President Trump criticized media coverage, saying, "It's hard to believe how violently fake news distorts the truth about me," and added, "No matter what I say or do, nothing is reported about me honestly." He continued, "Even if I had struck a deal with Russia to force Moscow to surrender, fake news and their partners in the radical left Democratic Party would say I made a terrible mistake and a very bad deal," adding, "That's exactly why they are called fake news."

Previously, on August 15, President Trump met with President Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. However, the summit concluded without any concrete agreement, and the scheduled expanded meeting was omitted. As a result, local U.S. media criticized the summit, claiming it only served to help President Putin return to the diplomatic stage.

Immediately following the summit, President Trump has been pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept President Putin's demand to cede the eastern Donbas region in order to sign a peace agreement. On August 18, he is scheduled to meet with President Zelensky and European leaders at the White House for follow-up discussions. Depending on the outcome of these talks, there is a possibility that a trilateral summit between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine could be held.
