Wearing Earrings While Sleeping Accelerates Aging
Remove Them Before Bed and Clean Regularly to Prevent Damage
Medical experts have warned that the habit of sleeping with earrings on can accelerate the aging process.
The New York Post reported that dermatologist Dr. Samantha Ellis recently stated on social media that "sleeping with earrings on puts unnecessary pressure on the ear canal and earlobes, causing them to sag more quickly."
Dr. Ellis explained, "Earlobe sagging typically appears after one's 40s, but the habit of wearing earrings can speed up this process." She advised, "The simplest way to prevent this is to remove earrings before going to bed."
The earlobes naturally become larger and more stretched with age. New York plastic surgeon Dr. Stafford Broumand commented, "People often think aging stops at a certain point, but the ears continue to grow, and stretched earlobes can make you look older."
The possibility of skin damage was also highlighted. Plastic surgeon Dr. Anil Shah told the Daily Mail, "Sleeping on your side with earrings on can cause continuous pressure, damaging the ear canal and surrounding tissue." He warned, "Because the skin of the ear is sensitive, there is a risk of permanent changes such as lumps or scarring."
Despite the aesthetic appeal of earrings, specialists emphasized that, in the long term, it is impossible to avoid negative effects such as skin and tissue damage and accelerated aging. Their common advice is to always remove earrings before sleeping and to practice regular cleaning and skin care.
Dr. Shah noted, "Earrings easily accumulate sweat, sebum, and hair product residues, making them a breeding ground for bacteria." He added, "If not cleaned regularly, they can cause inflammation or infection." He recommended washing the earlobes with mild soap and water before bed, and disinfecting them with alcohol or saline solution.
