According to CBS and other outlets, former Secretary Clinton made these remarks during a podcast appearance on August 15 (local time), ahead of the planned Alaska summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Clinton said, "If it is possible to end this terrible war, which began with Putin's invasion of a neighboring country, without forcing Ukraine to cede any territory, and if President Trump is the architect of that, I would nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize."

She added, "If President Trump can truly stand up to Putin, this is the opportunity. To be clear, there must be a ceasefire, and there should be no territorial exchange. In order to demonstrate genuine goodwill and not threaten European security, Putin must actually withdraw from the territories he has occupied," setting clear conditions.

Clinton further stated, "I hope President Trump will stand up to Putin not only for Ukraine, its democracy, and its brave people, but also for the security and interests of our own country."

President Trump responded to Clinton's remarks with gratitude.

In an interview with Fox News that day, he said her comments were "very nice," and added, "I might have to like her again."

President Trump and former Secretary Clinton faced off in the 2016 U.S. presidential election for the 45th presidency.

At the time, President Trump referenced the controversy over Clinton's use of a private email account to send and receive classified information during her tenure as Secretary of State from 2009 to 2012, vowing, "If I become president, I will launch a special investigation and put Hillary in jail."

His supporters also chanted the slogan "lock her up."
