The Democratic Party of Korea criticized Ahn Cheolsoo, a People Power Party leadership candidate, for staging a banner protest against the special pardon of former Cho Kuk Innovation Party leader Cho Kuk and others during the August 15 Liberation Day ceremony, stating, "He tarnished an event meant to honor independence heroes and the spirit of the era for his own political ambitions."
On the 16th, Baek Seungah, the party's spokesperson in the National Assembly, commented, "Representative Ahn turned the Liberation Day ceremony into a political show to promote his campaign for party leadership."
Spokesperson Baek further emphasized, "Figures like Song Eonseok, who assaulted party staff, Jang Donghyuk, who sides with Jeon Hangil, a proponent of election fraud theories, and Kim Moonsu, who defended martial law, remained silent puppets throughout the Yoon Sukyeol and Kim Keonhee administration. Now, under the Lee Jaemyung government, they are focused on obstruction and power struggles, thereby insulting Liberation Day."
She continued, "Those who have the courage to stage picket protests, sit-ins, and make reckless remarks even on Liberation Day-why did they remain silent and submissive before Yoon Sukyeol and Kim Keonhee?"
She added, "The People Power Party, which condoned and defended martial law and rebellion, pretending to care for the people, is no different from pro-Japanese collaborators who waved the Taegukgi after liberation. We will completely root out the People Power Party that defends rebellion, and ensure that the collaborators who ruined the country are judged by history and the law."
In response, candidate Ahn posted a photo of a "Justice Bat" on social media, stating, "This is my reply to the Democratic Party's statement: For those who act as henchmen defending Lee Jaemyung's traitorous pardons, the Justice Bat is the cure."
The "Justice Bat" refers to the wooden club used by the late Park Giseo when he executed Ahn Doohee, the assassin of Kim Gu, a revered independence leader.
