This festival was organized by the Namyangju Chapter of the Korean Freedom Federation (President Bae Jinseong), with the city providing a subsidy of 9.68 million won.
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, the event was attended by approximately 1,700 citizens, including Mayor Joo Gwangdeok, Lee Jeongae, Vice Chairperson of the City Council, provincial and city council members, heads of institutions and social organizations, as well as children and youth.
After holding a Liberation Day commemoration ceremony, participants performed a 'calf raise' warm-up exercise to strengthen their calves before the walking festival. They then walked together for about 3.5 kilometers along the trails around Hongyureung, reflecting on the significance of liberation and honoring the spirit of sacrifice of the patriotic martyrs.
Mayor Joo Gwangdeok stated, "This Peaceful Unification Prayer Walking Festival is a meaningful occasion to honor the sacrifices of independence patriots and patriotic martyrs, and to express our gratitude to their families." He added, "By remembering history and wishing for reunification here today, we are aligning with the direction Namyangju is taking toward the future."
He continued, "Marking the 30th anniversary of becoming a city, Namyangju is evolving into a transportation hub with five subway lines and five GTX lines, and is moving toward becoming a city of one million people by attracting future industries such as Kakao and Woori Bank’s digital centers." He emphasized, "Together with our citizens, we will surely achieve the peaceful reunification of our nation, the prosperity of a free Republic of Korea, and the super growth of Namyangju."
President Bae Jinseong remarked, "Liberation was achieved through the sacrifices and dedication of countless unnamed individuals." He added, "I hope this festival serves as an opportunity to remember the joy and significance of liberation, and to unite our citizens as one."
