Yangsan City in South Gyeongsang Province announced that, in celebration of the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, independence activist Kwon Ohwang (權五惶, 1919-unknown), a native of Won-ri, Wondong-myeon in Yangsan, has been selected as a recipient of commendation by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
In November 1940, while studying in Tokyo, Japan, Kwon Ohwang predicted Japan's defeat and engaged in leadership activities for Koreans as a member of the secret organization "Uri Joseon Independence Group." He was later arrested by Japanese police.
In this round of commendations, Kwon Ohwang's noble contributions have been recognized, and he has been selected as a recipient of the Order of Merit for National Foundation.
Mayor Na Dongyeon stated, "Earlier this year, on the anniversary of the March 1st Movement, ten previously unrecognized independence activists from the Yangsan area were honored with commendations. Now, on the 80th anniversary of Liberation, the recognition of another hero brings deep emotion and pride to all citizens of Yangsan. We must never forget the sacrifices and efforts of Kwon Ohwang and countless other independence activists, and we must continue to carry on their spirit."
