On August 14, Jeonnam Province announced that it had conducted specialized demolition training for local governments, architects, and engineers at the Yi Sun-sin Auditorium in the Eastern Government Complex. The training was aimed at preventing demolition work safety accidents and poor construction practices.
This training, organized by the Jeonnam Regional Architecture Safety Center, was designed to strengthen on-site response capabilities and to raise the level of demolition work safety management among city and county officials, thereby reducing disparities in work practices between local governments.
The training, held under the theme "Demolition Work Safety Management for a Safer Jeonnam," covered topics such as: trends and regulations in building demolition work; practical guidance on preparing and reviewing demolition plans; explanations of relevant laws and a Q&A session; and case studies from actual demolition projects.
In March of this year, a collapse occurred at a demolition site in Jegi 4 District, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul. In 2021, multiple fatalities were reported during demolition work in Hakdong 4 District, Gwangju. These incidents have led to growing calls for strengthening the capabilities of those involved in demolition projects.
Kwak Chunseop, Director of Architectural Development for Jeonnam Province and Head of the Regional Architecture Safety Center, stated, "Building safety requires proactive measures and prevention. Even a small warning sign observed on-site can be the starting point for realizing a safer Jeonnam. We will continue to expand capacity-building training and on-site inspections."
