On August 14, Minister Background Hoon and Second Vice Minister Ryu Jemyung of the Ministry of Science and ICT, along with Minister Kim Jungkwan and First Vice Minister Moon Sinhak of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, held a high-level meeting to discuss inter-ministerial cooperation measures for expanding AI adoption in the industrial sector.

With the era of physical AI now fully underway, the boundaries between hardware and software, as well as between fundamental and applied technologies, are becoming increasingly blurred, further highlighting the need for collaboration between the two ministries.

Against this backdrop, the ministers and vice ministers from both ministries shared the understanding that, without inter-ministerial collaboration, becoming a top-three global AI powerhouse will remain out of reach. This shared recognition led to the current meeting.

This meeting marks the starting point for cooperation between the two ministries, and they agreed to expand collaboration in various fields going forward, including manufacturing AX, physical AI, and AI semiconductors.

In addition, to achieve tangible results from their cooperation, the ministries decided to actively pursue joint projects. The Ministry of Science and ICT has strengths in fundamental technology development and software, while the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy excels in field-oriented technology development and hardware. Both ministries plan to continuously identify and promote collaborative projects that maximize their synergies.

As the first initiative, they will jointly plan large-scale projects linked to the regional expansion of AX within this year, aiming to establish leading regional AX models.

They will also form a vice-ministerial-level policy cooperation council to identify joint projects and policies, as well as explore ways to connect and collaborate between each ministry’s projects and the public-private alliances currently in operation.

Furthermore, they plan to promote exchanges among experts by creating a platform for sharing technology, data, and human resources held by each ministry’s research institutes. Through mutual recommendations among experts, both ministries will actively provide opportunities for participation in a wide range of projects.

Focusing on the three directions agreed upon during the meeting, the two ministries will continue to develop more detailed measures to further concretize their cooperation.
