People Power Party Ethics Committee Issues Light Disciplinary Action for Jeon Hangil's Convention Disruption
Ahn Cheolsoo: "Driving Him Out Would Not Be Enough... He Must Be Cut Off"
On August 14, Representative Ahn Cheolsoo of the People Power Party fiercely criticized the party's Ethics Committee for deciding to issue only a "warning," the lowest level of disciplinary action, against Jeon Hangil, who caused a disturbance at the party's national convention joint speech event. He called it "a day of disgrace for the People Power Party."
On his social media account that day, Representative Ahn directly targeted Jeon, saying, "A warning for a troublemaker who caused chaos in front of the heart of conservatism, the Daegu-Gyeongbuk party members? He is someone who should be driven out with salt, not merely warned. We must cut him off to survive."
He continued, "How can we save the party and regain the public's trust when we cannot even sever ties with a handful of extreme YouTubers? I am burning with anger," he strongly criticized.
Earlier that morning, Yeo Sangwon, chairman of the People Power Party's Ethics Committee, announced at a briefing held at the party's central headquarters in Yeouido that "opinions among the Ethics Committee members were divided, and the warning was decided by majority vote." The Ethics Committee explained that they took into account the absence of physical violence and considerations of fairness. Chairman Yeo emphasized, "We looked for disciplinary precedents for this incident but could not find any. This is a political issue that should be resolved politically, not legally."
