On August 14, Gyeongbuk Province and Pohang City held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 'Gyeongbuk Viewer Media Center' at the former Ocheon-eup Administrative Welfare Center in Ocheon-eup, Nam-gu, Pohang.
Over 100 people attended the ceremony, including Pohang Mayor Lee Kangdeok, Gyeongbuk Provincial Council members Lee Dongup, Lee Chilgu, Kim Jinyeop, and Seo Seokyoung, Pohang City Council Chairman Kim Ilman, Gyeongbuk Provincial Spokesperson Lim Daeseong, and Choi Munyong, Head of Management Planning at the Viewer Media Foundation. The event featured a pre-ceremony performance and a groundbreaking performance to celebrate the successful launch of the Viewer Media Center.
Gyeongbuk Province and Pohang City plan to invest a total project cost of 35 billion KRW to construct a new complex building by November 2026 on the site of the former Ocheon-eup Administrative Welfare Center. The facility will have one basement floor and four above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 5,898 square meters, housing both the Gyeongbuk Viewer Media Center and the Administrative Welfare Center.
The complex will not only include the Viewer Media Center but also the Ocheon-eup Administrative Welfare Center, allowing Gyeongbuk residents to conveniently access nearby public facilities. This is expected to significantly improve accessibility and convenience for local residents and establish the facility as a central hub for the region's content industry and administrative services.
Lim Daeseong, spokesperson for Gyeongbuk Province, stated, "The Gyeongbuk Viewer Media Center will be more than just an educational space. It will be a place where residents can actively participate in media production, experience a variety of content, and access a wide range of information." He added, "We expect this facility to greatly contribute to strengthening residents' media capabilities and revitalizing the local media industry."
Meanwhile, the Viewer Media Center is a public media education and experience facility operated by the Viewer Media Foundation under the Korea Communications Commission, in accordance with Article 90-2 of the Broadcasting Act. Currently, there are 12 such centers operating across the country.
