The Mungyeong City Council in Gyeongbuk visited Sancheong County in Gyeongnam, which suffered severe damage from record-breaking heavy rainfall, to support flood recovery efforts. On August 13, a total of 26 people, including city council members and staff from the council secretariat, participated in recovery work in Sinchon Village, Chahwang-myeon, Sancheong County, helping to clean up flooded farmland and collect flood-related waste.
Mungyeong City Council in Gyeongbuk, along with 26 council members and staff, have stepped up to support flood recovery efforts in Sancheong, Gyeongnam by organizing submerged farmland and collecting waste.
From July 16 to July 20, Sancheong County experienced up to 759mm of rainfall over five days, resulting in the most severe damage among all areas in Gyeongnam. According to the National Disaster Management System (NDMS), property damage amounted to 491.4 billion KRW, and there were significant human casualties, with 14 people dead and 1 person missing.
In particular, the high proportion of elderly residents made it difficult for locals to carry out recovery efforts on their own. On this day, the Mungyeong City Council volunteer group departed early in the morning to provide practical support, such as removing sediment from the flooded farmland and collecting waste that had been left throughout the village.
This recovery activity was organized at a time when the initial surge of volunteer participation had declined over time, and it provided significant encouragement to the residents.
Chairman Lee Jeonggeol stated, "Disasters can strike anyone at any time, and reaching out in times of hardship is the true strength of a local community. We will do our utmost to help the residents of Sancheong County return to their daily lives as soon as possible."
The Mungyeong City Council plans to continue its interest and solidarity with disaster-affected sites and to strengthen disaster response capabilities through mutual cooperation between local governments.
