PPP Committee on Dictatorship Response: "Special Prosecutor's Demand for Entire Party Membership List Is a Declaration of War to Dismantle the Party"

"We Will Mobilize All Legal and Political Means to Respond"

The Special Committee for the Protection of Judicial Justice and Prevention of Dictatorship of the People Power Party stated on August 13 that the search and seizure of the party's central headquarters by the special prosecutor Min Jungki's team, which is investigating allegations related to First Lady Kim Keonhee, is "a declaration of war to dismantle the party and an unconstitutional outrage that shakes the very foundation of liberalism."

Representative Park Juntae, a member of the committee, declared in a statement at the Yeouido central headquarters that day, "The attempt to seize the party membership list, which is the lifeblood and very essence of a political party, is unthinkable in a democratic nation."

On the morning of August 13, the special prosecutor's team sent investigators to the People Power Party's Yeouido central headquarters to secure digital data necessary for the investigation. The special prosecutor demanded the submission of the entire party membership list, which includes approximately 5 million members, but the party has refused to comply.

Representative Park criticized, "In particular, the special prosecutor's idea of cross-referencing the membership lists of a specific religious organization and the party is a trampling of both freedom of religion and party democracy." He further pointed out, "This is a political maneuver by the special prosecutor in line with the Democratic Party's talk of dissolving the party."

He continued, "While the special prosecutor's outrageous idea is problematic, we also express serious concern toward the court that issued such an unconstitutional warrant."

Representative Park also raised his voice regarding the search and seizure taking place during the party convention to elect a new leader. He said, "It is deplorable that they would disrupt the party convention, a celebration for party members, and attempt to infringe on personal information," emphasizing, "We will mobilize all legal and political means to protect party democracy and the constitutional order."
