Kim Keonhee Arrested on Bribery Charges on August 12
Governor Kim Youngrok Calls It "Inevitable Justice" on Facebook
Stresses, "No More National Crises Caused by Those in Power"
Governor Kim Youngrok of South Jeolla Province sharply criticized the arrest of Kim Keonhee, calling it "a shameful event."
On August 13, Governor Kim stated on his Facebook page, "Last night, Kim Keonhee, who has been at the center of much controversy, was taken into custody," adding, "This is the inevitable outcome of cause and effect and poetic justice."
He went on to say, "Kim Keonhee has been embroiled in numerous allegations, including the manipulation of Deutsch Motors stock prices, involvement in Myung Taegyun's nomination, receiving an expensive necklace and luxury bag, and the alteration of the Yangpyeong Expressway route." He further pointed out, "Despite the abundance of evidence and testimony regarding these suspicions, she brazenly denied all charges, which has sparked public outrage among many citizens."
He continued, "It is extremely unfortunate and disgraceful that, for the first time in our nation's history, a former president and his spouse have been detained at the same time." He added, "There must be a thorough and unrestricted investigation and punishment to prevent another national crisis caused by those in the highest positions of power."
He also stated, "Acts of insurrection and aiding such crimes must be excluded from any pardons in order to uphold true justice." He emphasized, "Through strict legal and historical judgment, we must put an end to this unfortunate chapter in our history and use this as an opportunity for a new beginning for the Republic of Korea."
Meanwhile, on August 12 at approximately 11:58 a.m., Judge Jeong Jaeuk, who is in charge of warrants at the Seoul Central District Court, issued an arrest warrant for Kim Keonhee on charges of violating the Capital Markets Act, the Political Funds Act, and aggravated bribery under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.
As a result, for the first time in the history of the Republic of Korea, a former presidential couple has been detained at the same time.
