The Spirit of Liberation Runs on Rails
Stories of the Independence Movement in Everyday Life with Daegu Citizens
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, the "Patriotic Theme Train" currently operating in Daegu will run throughout the city on Liberation Day as well.
This train, planned by the Daegu Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Director Kim Jongsul), features a full wrap on the exterior of all cars of Metro Line 3, the nation's only monorail. The initiative aims to allow citizens to encounter the meaning of the independence movement during their daily commutes and routines.
The exterior design highlights the National Debt Repayment Movement and the Korean Liberation Association. The National Debt Repayment Movement began in Daegu and spread nationwide as an economic campaign to restore national sovereignty. The Korean Liberation Association was established in Daegu in 1915 and played a leading role in training independence fighters and organizing armed resistance against Japanese colonial rule.
Inside the train, there are displays of major memorial sites in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, as well as a "Hero Road" photo zone featuring heroes of the Korean War. These features are intended to help passengers naturally reflect on the significance of patriotism and remembrance.
Kim Jongsul, Director of the Daegu Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, stated, "We hope that the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day will serve as an opportunity to share Daegu's history of the independence movement with citizens and to pass it on to the next generation."
The Patriotic Theme Train began operating on July 15. Initially scheduled to run until August 15, its operation has been extended until the end of this month thanks to strong support from citizens and sponsorship from Daeseon Co., Ltd. and Daegu Metropolitan Transit Corporation.
