Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has announced plans to file an antitrust lawsuit against Apple. He claims that Apple is showing favoritism toward ChatGPT on the App Store, while discriminating against xAI's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot 'Grok' and other competitors he leads.
On August 11 (local time), CEO Musk wrote on the social networking service X (formerly Twitter), "Apple is preventing any AI company other than OpenAI from reaching the number one spot on the App Store," adding, "This is a clear violation of antitrust laws, and xAI (the developer of Grok) will immediately take legal action."
He also criticized, "X is the number one news app worldwide, and Grok ranks fifth among all apps, so why aren't they included in the 'Must Have' section?" He added, "This is politically motivated behavior."
CEO Musk further shared an image showing ChatGPT-5, recently released by OpenAI, featured in the App Store's 'TRY NOW' section, and argued that this constituted "Apple's antitrust conduct." The official Grok account also posted, stating, "Apple's App Store curation is biased and generally favors established AI like ChatGPT over innovative competitors."
Apple is currently collaborating with OpenAI in the field of iPhone AI technology, and ChatGPT is the number one free app on the US App Store as well as the only AI chatbot listed among Apple's 'Must Have' apps.
Business outlet CNBC reported, "CEO Musk's claims criticize Apple for limiting exposure opportunities for competing apps as it expands its partnership with OpenAI," and added, "The longstanding feud between CEO Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is also a factor behind this conflict."
