Changwon Special City, Enshrinement of Patriotic Martyrs' Memorial Tablets on the 80th Anniversary of Liberation and Unveiling of Independence Activists' Memorial Monument.
The city explained that the 80th anniversary of Liberation is a meaningful year to honor the hard-won independence of the Korean people after a long struggle against colonial rule, and to remember with gratitude and reverence the countless patriots who sacrificed their lives in the process. To pay tribute to these martyrs and patriotic heroes, the city enshrined memorial tablets for the patriotic martyrs and unveiled a memorial monument honoring 197 independence activists from Changwon.
In particular, the enshrinement ceremony was initiated to actively discover and shed new light on the achievements of patriotic martyrs whose memorial tablets had not yet been enshrined. Newly enshrined were the memorial tablets of Gong Eulsu, Kim Jaeman, Kim Jooseok, and Kim Changse, all of whom were recipients of the Presidential Commendation. Their noble sacrifice and dedication played a significant role in the liberation of the nation.
At the site, a solemn ceremony was held with the participation of the bereaved families, including the offering of flowers, enshrinement of the memorial tablets, and bows by the families. Attendees expressed their respect and gratitude for those who dedicated themselves to independence. With this enshrinement, the shrine now holds a total of 100 memorial tablets, with four newly added to the existing 96.
Following the enshrinement ceremony, the unveiling of the memorial monument dedicated to Changwon's independence activists took place, making it a moment of deep historical significance and emotion.
This memorial monument was made possible through the sponsorship of BNK Kyongnam Bank, as well as the support and cooperation of the Masan General Social Welfare Center and members of the Liberation Association, in addition to Changwon Special City.
The monument, made of granite for permanent preservation, measures 8.1 meters wide, 3.5 meters long, and 3.2 meters high. The work, titled "Memory of Changwon's Righteous Spirit," embodies the desire to keep alive and further develop the passionate yearning and determination for independence that defined the Korean people.
Jang Geumyong, Acting Mayor of Changwon Special City, stated, "On the 80th anniversary of Liberation, as we enshrine the memorial tablets of four patriotic martyrs and unveil a monument honoring Changwon's independence activists, we must never forget the noble sacrifice and dedication of our fallen heroes and patriots. We will carry on their patriotic spirit and strive to build a brilliant future."
