Chairpersons of Metropolitan and Provincial Councils Gather in Sejong

On August 11, chairpersons of metropolitan and provincial councils from across the country gathered in one place.

The regular meeting of the Council of Metropolitan and Provincial Council Chairpersons, hosted by the Sejong City Council, was held at the Grand Banquet Hall of the Sejong Convention Center over a two-day schedule, with chairpersons from metropolitan and provincial councils nationwide in attendance.

The main agenda item at the regular meeting was the election of the chairperson for the second half of the 19th term. As a result of the vote, the chairperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Council was elected as the new head of the council. Going forward, the council plans to strengthen exchanges and cooperation among city and provincial councils nationwide, and to promote various joint activities aimed at improving residents' welfare and advancing local autonomy.

At the opening ceremony, Kim Minjae, Vice Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Choi Minho, Mayor of Sejong, and Choi Gyojin, Superintendent of Sejong City Office of Education, attended and delivered congratulatory remarks. The attending council chairpersons emphasized to Vice Minister Kim Minjae the issues of regional extinction and the importance of balanced development, and requested active support and cooperation for the realization of local decentralization.

Im Chaesung, chairman of the Sejong City Council, stated, "It is highly meaningful that metropolitan and provincial councils from across Korea have gathered together in Sejong, the administrative capital," adding, "I hope this regular meeting will further strengthen the unity of local councils and become a new driving force for the development of local autonomy."
