Victory at FedEx St. Jude Championship, First Playoff Event
Back-to-Back Birdies in Second and Third Playoff Holes, Securing 12th Career Win
Exceptional Putting Performance on Greens Drives Success
Scotty Cameron Phantom T-5 Tour Prototype Powers Rose’s Triumph

Veteran golfer Justin Rose of England, age 45, claimed victory in a major showdown.

On August 10 (local time), Rose secured a playoff win at the first event of the PGA Tour Playoffs, the FedEx St. Jude Championship (total prize money: $20 million), held at TPC Southwind (par 70, 7,288 yards) in Memphis, Tennessee. This marked his 12th PGA Tour victory and his first in two and a half years since the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February 2023. He received a winner’s prize of $3.6 million (approximately 5 billion KRW).

Rose shot three under par on the day, tying with J.J. Spaun of the United States and forcing a playoff. The first playoff hole on the 18th (par 4) ended in a tie with both players making par, and the second playoff hole also ended in a tie with both making birdie. Rose demonstrated his resilience by sinking a winning birdie in the third playoff hole. His putting was particularly impressive, averaging 1.54 putts per green in regulation over four days (ranking third in the field).

Rose used a Scotty Cameron Phantom T-5 Tour Prototype putter, which proved especially effective in the playoff. He made a birdie putt of about 1.86 meters in the second playoff hole, and in the third playoff hole?again on the 18th with the pin location changed?he sank a winning birdie putt from approximately 3.5 meters. Although his final birdie putt was longer than Spaun’s (about 2.23 meters), Rose holed his first.

Rose, who had lost his previous four playoffs, secured his first playoff victory in 11 years since winning the Quicken Loans National in 2014, bringing his career playoff record to two wins and four losses. The record for oldest winner at a PGA Tour Playoff event is held by Vijay Singh of Fiji, who won two playoff events in 2008 at age 45 years and 6 months. Rose, who turned 45 last month, now becomes the second-oldest winner in playoff history.
