Gyeonggi Province Governor Dongyeon Kim recommended "Tilted Equality," co-authored by French economist Thomas Piketty and Harvard University professor Michael Sandel, as the second book in "Dongyeon Kim's Library."
On June 10, Governor Kim introduced the book on his social media account, where he runs "Dongyeon Kim's Library," saying, "The book I would like to read together today is 'Tilted Equality.' This book summarizes a discussion between Thomas Piketty, a renowned French economist, and Michael Sandel, a professor at Harvard University in the United States, which took place in Paris last year."
He continued, "This book deals with the issue of inequality. Alongside the low birthrate problem, the digital transformation, and climate change?issues currently facing Korean society?the greatest challenge we need to address is inequality. The two authors delve deeply into economic inequality, political inequality, and even issues that threaten human dignity."
Gyeonggi Province Governor Dongyeon Kim recommended the co-authored book "Tilted Equality" by Thomas Piketty and Professor Michael Sandel on June 10 through "Dongyeon Kim's Library."
Furthermore, he added, "There are two main directions for solutions. One is the redistribution of income and wealth. The second is what is called 'decommodification' in certain areas?for example, strengthening the public provision of essential needs such as education and healthcare, so that people do not have to purchase these with money, and expanding opportunities for participation in politics."
He also remarked, "In this book, Professor Piketty expresses more radical opinions than Michael Sandel. What frustrated me while reading was the question, 'Why is there no such dignified and intense reflection and debate on inequality in our Korean society?'"
He particularly expressed concern, saying, "The structure of conflict in Korean society is becoming more severe, and sustainability is being threatened. I believe that fierce debate, thorough preparation, and social consensus must come first. If we do not do this, these issues will eventually become major threats to our society."
Governor Kim concluded, "I believe I need to make even greater efforts, and I would like to recommend this book to anyone interested in the structural problems of our society."
