Artist Talk on the 15th, Registration Available via SNS
Seoul Auction announced on the 7th that it will hold a special auction titled 'The Ceramic' in collaboration with the Korea Ceramic Foundation, aiming to highlight new possibilities in contemporary ceramic art. Hosted by the Korea Ceramic Foundation and organized by Seoul Auction, the auction will be open for bidding on the Seoul Auction website from the 14th to the 20th.
'The Ceramic' marks the first collaborative project between Seoul Auction and the Korea Ceramic Foundation. The initiative seeks to present the multifaceted potential of contemporary ceramics simultaneously in both museums and the market through public-private cooperation. Furthermore, it was planned to expand the domestic collecting culture by drawing attention to the ceramic craft genre, which has received relatively little focus in the art market.
This project features seven artists: Kwon Hyein, Shin Wondong, Yang Jiwoon, Lee Songam, Lee Inhwa, Lim Jaehyun, and Jung Youngyu. All participating artists are emerging ceramicists born in the 1980s and 1990s.
A total of 35 works will be auctioned. The collection showcases a wide spectrum of contemporary ceramic art, ranging from modern interpretations of traditional ceramics such as Buncheong, Baekja, and Heukja, to experimental ceramic expressions utilizing 3D modeling and other diverse sculptural languages.
The auction preview exhibition will be held from the 15th to the 20th at Seoul Auction Gangnam Center in Sinsa-dong, Seoul. The preview is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and admission is free for all visitors. After the auction, the exhibition will continue as a special exhibition at the Gyeonggi Ceramic Livingware Museum.
On the opening day of the preview, August 15, there will also be an artist talk event, offering an opportunity to interact directly with the participating artists. Attendance at the artist talk is limited to those who register in advance, and applications can be submitted starting August 8 via the link posted on Seoul Auction's official social networking service (SNS).
A Seoul Auction representative stated, "This first collaboration with the Korea Ceramic Foundation is a meaningful attempt to provide a sustainable distribution channel for the ceramic craft genre and to build an ecosystem that connects art from creation to consumption. We hope that more collectors will discover the new aesthetics of contemporary ceramics, and that emerging artists will gain opportunities to connect with new audiences."
Choi Moonhwan, CEO of the Korea Ceramic Foundation, emphasized, "This collaboration is focused on expanding the role of public art institutions beyond exhibitions, broadening the horizon so that artists' practices can encounter a wider range of artistic intersections. As ceramic expression methods are rapidly diversifying today, we hope this serves as an opportunity to further enrich the appreciation and perception of ceramic craft."
