Son Heungmin Leaves Tottenham for LAFC
LAFC Also Announces Official Signing on Homepage
On August 6 (local time), English professional football club Tottenham Hotspur officially announced the transfer of their 'captain' Son Heungmin to Major League Soccer (MLS) club Los Angeles FC (LAFC).
On its homepage, Tottenham made Son Heungmin's transfer official, displaying on the main page, "Sonny (Son Heungmin's nickname) has left for LAFC in MLS."
Tottenham stated, "The 33-year-old Sonny joined Tottenham in August 2015, ten years ago, and has established himself as one of the greatest players in the club's history. He scored 173 goals in 454 appearances, achieving the fifth-highest tally in our history."
The club also highlighted, "His greatest achievement was leading the club to victory in the UEFA Europa League in Bilbao, Spain, in May 2025. He has become one of only 13 captains in our history to lift a major trophy."
After transferring from Leverkusen in 2015 for approximately $29.8 million (about 411.2 billion KRW), Son Heungmin played over 450 matches for Tottenham and became the seventh player in Premier League history to record 198 attacking points.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said, "He is one of the greatest players ever to wear the Lilywhite shirt, and he has given us the joy of watching him for the past ten years. He is not only a talented footballer but also an incredible person who has inspired and moved people at the club and around the world."
Levy continued, "Sonny has given so much to this club, and we will be forever grateful. We wish him the very best for the future, and he will always be welcomed as a beloved member of the Tottenham family."
On the same day, LAFC also officially announced the signing of Son Heungmin on its homepage.
LAFC stated that Son Heungmin will occupy a spot on the 'International Player Roster' and explained, "He will become eligible to play as soon as he receives his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC)."
Bennett Rosenthal, LAFC’s co-owner, said, "Bringing Sonny to LAFC and our city has been our dream for years. My partners and I have immense respect for Sonny both as a 'player' and as a 'person.'"
Previously, in June 2023, ESPN reported that Son Heungmin had received a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad. ESPN noted, "Son Heungmin rejected Al Ittihad's lucrative offer last year and stayed at Tottenham, but this time, LAFC outbid Al Ittihad and won the race to sign him."
