Full-Fledged Shift Toward Balanced National Development Centered on Sejong Announced

The Democratic Party of Korea's Sejong City Committee announced on August 6 that it welcomes the designation of the construction of the presidential Sejong office as an urgent national task for balanced regional development.

The Sejong City Committee stated in a commentary that the National Policy Planning Committee's decision marks the beginning of a concrete roadmap for implementation, rather than a slogan only raised during election periods. The committee also noted that the office will be officially referred to as the Sejong Office, not the "second office," signaling a full-fledged shift toward balanced national development centered on Sejong.

The committee added, "This is a visible step forward in fulfilling President Lee Jaemyung's pledge to complete the office during his term, and it is a response to the public's long-standing desire to fundamentally address the chronic overconcentration in the capital region and the marginalization of local areas." The committee also emphasized, "The fact that the National Policy Planning Committee treats the Sejong administrative capital as an independent policy, separate from the 'Five Poles, Three Special Zones' strategy, demonstrates that the Lee Jaemyung administration views Sejong not merely as a tool for balanced development, but as a central axis for redesigning the operational structure of the Republic of Korea."

The committee further stated, "This has become a decisive opportunity to provide political and policy support for the Special Act on the Establishment of the Administrative Capital, which was proposed by Representative Kang Junhyun." The committee evaluated the bill as "a comprehensive reform act that stipulates the relocation of the presidential office, the National Assembly, and central administrative agencies, and includes the formulation of implementation plans, designation of the planned site, establishment of a pan-governmental promotion body, and the creation of a special account."
