Mayor Baek Younghyeon: "Remodeling Closed Geumju Elementary School... Will Create a Community Cultural Space for Citizens"

Pocheon City Selected for the Ministry of Education's '2nd School Complex Facility Contest Project'
Secures 4.758 Billion KRW in National Funding... Geumju Elementary to Become a Complex Cultural Facility

On August 6, Pocheon City (Mayor Baek Younghyeon) announced that it has been selected as a finalist for the '2025 School Complex Facility 2nd Public Contest Project' organized by the Ministry of Education, securing 4,758 million KRW in national funding.

The selected project involves remodeling Geumju Elementary School, which was closed in 2020, into an experiential complex cultural facility for young children, lower-grade elementary students, and their families.

In particular, this project has been designed as a hub facility to comprehensively support the education and care policy infrastructure across Pocheon City. With the goal of creating "a place where children's imagination meets adults' relaxation," the city plans to establish an open space where play and rest coexist.

The planned facility will include an indoor experience center, a media art space, a community center, and an outdoor experiential learning area. By transforming both indoor and outdoor spaces into venues for learning and experience, the city aims to increase children's engagement while also strengthening the cultural and welfare foundation of the local community.

Additionally, Pocheon City plans to establish the 'Pocheon Education Research Institute' as a specialized education platform involving current teachers and education experts, and to accelerate the development and dissemination of education policies tailored to Pocheon.

By securing 4,758 million KRW in national funding, Pocheon City expects to alleviate its financial burden and simultaneously ensure both the speed and stability of project implementation.

Mayor Baek Younghyeon of Pocheon stated, "This public contest project is a step toward establishing an educational and care hub facility that all children can enjoy together," adding, "We will develop it into a living cultural space where children can grow up safely and creatively, and where all citizens can benefit."

He continued, "I would also like to express my deep gratitude to National Assembly member Kim Yongtae, who represents our district and serves on the National Assembly's Education Committee, for his efforts toward regional educational innovation and development. We will continue working to ensure that Pocheon develops into the best education city."

Pocheon City plans to complete administrative procedures and basic design this year and fully launch the project with the goal of opening in October 2028. The city will also collaborate with the Pocheon Office of Education, Korea Educational Broadcasting System (EBS), child-focused organizations, and local communities to operate a variety of experiential, care, and play programs.
