A Festival Featuring Potatoes, Green Onions, and Jeoneo
Boseong Jeoneo Festival and Hoecheon Residents' Day to Be Held Together
Boseong County in South Jeolla Province announced on August 6 that the 17th Boseong Jeoneo Festival, which brings together the summer sea and local delicacies, and the 32nd Hoecheon Residents' Day will be held together for two days from August 22 to 23 at the Yulpo Pine Forest Beach area.
This year’s festival is hosted by the Hoecheon Residents’ Association (President Kim Yongjang) and organized by the Boseong Jeoneo Festival Promotion Committee (Chairman Kim Yongjang). Under the theme “A Perfect Jeoneo Festival! A Place of Harmony!”, the event has been planned as a comprehensive local specialty festival where visitors can enjoy Boseong’s signature seafood, Jeoneo, as well as Hoecheon’s specialty products such as potatoes and green onions all in one place.

The highlight of the Jeoneo Festival, the Jeoneo catching experience, will be held in a large pool set up on the beach instead of the traditional mudflat area at Yulpo Pine Forest Beach, with enhanced safety measures starting this year.
Participants can experience the thrill of catching live Jeoneo with their bare hands in cool water. The fish they catch can be grilled on-site and enjoyed for their savory flavor, and can also be tasted together with fluffy steamed potatoes and fragrant green onion dishes.
The Jeoneo catching experience will take place twice: at 4:00 p.m. on August 22 and at 11:00 a.m. on August 23. The participation fee is 15,000 won, of which 5,000 won will be refunded as a coupon usable at the event venue. Elementary school students and younger can participate for free.
On the first day, August 22, the festival will begin with an opening ceremony at 11:00 a.m., followed by a residents’ singing contest, the Jeoneo catching experience, a performance by the Pyongyang Art Troupe, and a gathering event for tourists.
On the second day, August 23, the festival will feature the Jeoneo catching experience, another gathering event for tourists, and a performance by the Boseong County Korean Traditional Music Orchestra, bringing the festival to a grand finale.
Throughout the venue, there will be booths for the exhibition and sale of local agricultural specialties, a food market offering potatoes, seafood pancakes, corn, grilled shrimp, and more, children’s experience booths, and photo zones featuring Jeoneo, potato, and green onion characters, ensuring enjoyment for visitors of all ages.
Jeoneo, one of Boseong’s nine signature delicacies, is a low-calorie, high-protein food rich in unsaturated fatty acids, making it effective for weight control and prevention of adult diseases. In particular, its fine bones contain more than twice as much calcium as milk, making Jeoneo a well-known healthy ingredient for growing children and those needing health management.
Kim Yongjang, Chairman of the Boseong Jeoneo Festival Promotion Committee, said, “We are doing our utmost to ensure that this festival becomes a cherished memory for tourists visiting Boseong during the holiday season and a place of unity for local residents.”
