On August 6, police arrested a man in his 20s in Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province, for posting an online threat to bomb Shinsegae.
According to the police, at around 11:15 p.m. the previous day, Mr. A left a comment on a YouTube news video about a potential bombing at the Shinsegae Department Store Myeong-dong branch, stating, "I will bomb Shinsegae at 5 p.m. tomorrow." After a report was filed with the Yongin Seobu Police Station via the 112 emergency number, the suspect was identified and taken into custody by the Hadong Police Station.
Under current law, posting a threat regarding the installation of explosives is punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won, in accordance with Article 116-2 of the Criminal Act (Public Threats).
A police official stated, "We plan to bring Mr. A to the Hadong Police Station for questioning," adding, "All searches of the Shinsegae Department Store have been suspended."
