Anthropic, a global artificial intelligence (AI) company regarded as a major competitor to OpenAI, has established a Korean subsidiary.
According to the IT industry on August 5, Anthropic completed the registration of its Korean corporation, 'Anthropic Korea Limited Company,' on July 28.
The business purposes listed include: 'sales and licensing of AI software, services, and products'; 'provision of AI technology implementation support and consulting services'; 'protection and management of AI technology intellectual property'; and 'value-added telecommunications and telecommunications sales business.'
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic is a US-based AI startup that primarily focuses on its large language model (LLM), Claude. The company became widely known after securing an investment of $8 billion (approximately 11.6 trillion won) from Amazon. In May, Anthropic unveiled its latest model, 'Claude Opus 4.'
Anthropic had previously hinted at the establishment of its Korean branch when it held its first event in Korea in March. At the event, Kate Jensen, Anthropic's Chief Revenue Officer, stated, "We came to Korea to help companies solve problems through Claude," and added, "This year will mark our first full-scale investment in the Asia-Pacific region, and we also plan to establish a branch in Korea."
Earlier, OpenAI also officially established a corporation in Korea in May and began recruiting employees for its Korean branch.
