Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) is set to accelerate the energy transition in the railway sector.
On August 5, KORAIL announced the launch of the 'RE100 Task Force,' which will operate directly under the CEO.
The RE100 Task Force integrates existing organizations and personnel in the environmental and energy sectors, and will be reorganized into five specialized divisions: Carbon Neutrality, Renewable Energy, Future Development, Environmental Operations, and Support. Including the general director, a total of 23 members will participate.
The Carbon Neutrality Division is responsible for developing KORAIL's own carbon neutrality roadmap in response to energy and climate change. The Renewable Energy Division will establish strategies related to energy savings, including the development of renewable energy transportation models utilizing the rail network and planning for solar power generation.
The Future Development Division will identify and promote future-oriented projects such as pilot projects for LNG combined heat and power plants and demonstration research on hydrogen electric trains. The Environmental Operations Division will handle tasks related to environmental management, including air, soil, and water quality.
The Support Division will review the safety of ongoing projects, monitor government policies and new technology trends, and work to expand public-private cooperation and improve relevant systems.
Park Youngsik, head of the RE100 Task Force, stated, "The RE100 Task Force was launched to quickly and comprehensively implement RE100, one of the government's top priorities, in the railway sector," adding, "As a key national infrastructure, KORAIL will strive to ensure that railways lead the way in carbon neutrality and the expansion of eco-friendly energy."
