KORAIL Launches CEO-Led RE100 Task Force to Drive Eco-Friendly Railways

Full-Scale Push for Carbon Neutrality and Energy Transition
Including Demonstration Research on Hydrogen-Powered Electric Trains

KORAIL, the nation's largest public enterprise in terms of electricity consumption, is taking full-scale action toward company-wide carbon neutrality and energy transition.

On August 5, KORAIL announced that it recently held an inaugural meeting for the "RE100 (Renewable Energy 100%) Task Force" at its Daejeon headquarters, where it discussed mid- to long-term energy transition strategies. The RE100 Task Force was newly established as a direct organization under the CEO to quickly implement the government's 100% renewable energy policy in the railway sector.

The task force brings together existing personnel related to environment and energy, and consists of 23 members including the general director. The task force is divided into five sections: ▲Carbon Neutrality ▲Renewable Energy ▲Future Development ▲Environmental Operations ▲Support.

The Carbon Neutrality section is responsible for establishing a roadmap for energy and climate change response. The Renewable Energy section develops renewable energy transportation models utilizing the railway network and formulates solar power generation strategies.

The Future Development section handles new technology projects such as a pilot project for an LNG combined heat and power plant and demonstration research on hydrogen-powered electric trains. The Environmental Operations section oversees overall environmental management, including air, soil, and water quality. The Support section is in charge of safety reviews, public-private cooperation, and institutional improvements.

Park Youngsik, head of the RE100 Task Force, stated, "As a core national transportation infrastructure, we will take the lead in carbon neutrality and the expansion of eco-friendly energy to ensure a sustainable future centered on railways."
