A Day Before the Hiroshima Atomic Bombing Anniversary, President Lee Posts on Facebook
President Lee: "We Will More Firmly Uphold the Value of Peace to Prevent the Repetition of War Horrors"
On August 5, President Lee Jaemyung expressed his deepest condolences and sympathy to the Korean atomic bomb victims and their bereaved families, who suffered multiple layers of historical turmoil and pain in a foreign land, not their homeland, ahead of the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings in Japan.
President Lee made this statement in a Facebook post titled "Engraving a Promise of Peace for a History of Suffering," published a day before the anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bombing.
He wrote, "Eighty years ago, the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan instantly took the lives of countless people. Our compatriots residing in Japan also had to make great sacrifices, and the victims and their families have suffered for a long time."
President Lee also stated his intention to continue efforts to heal the scars of the atomic bombings. He said, "Although the Special Act on Support for Korean Atomic Bomb Victims, enacted in 2017, established a practical foundation for support, considering the long years that have passed, there are still many areas lacking. The government will continue its efforts to heal the wounds caused by the atomic bombings."
Additionally, President Lee noted, "Every year, memorial services are held in both Korea and Japan to comfort the souls of the victims." He expressed deep gratitude to the Korean Residents Union in Japan for building memorial monuments and organizing these memorial services on behalf of the homeland. He added, "We will steadfastly uphold the value of peace to ensure that the horrors of war are never repeated."
