US House Members Urge Trump to Recognize Palestine as a State

France, United Kingdom, and Canada Join the Movement
Trump, Aligning with Netanyahu, Unlikely to Recognize

More than ten Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives have urged President Donald Trump to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state.

According to foreign media outlets such as Axios on August 4 (local time), more than ten Democratic House members signed this letter.

According to Axios, Representative Ro Khanna (California) led the initiative, and more than ten Democratic House members, including Greg Casar (Texas), Maxwell Frost (Florida), Jim McGovern (Massachusetts), and Bonnie Watson Coleman (New Jersey), joined in signing the letter. Representative Andre Carson (Indiana), who is Muslim, also participated.

They argued, "This tragic moment has underscored to the world the long-standing need to recognize the right of self-determination for Palestine."

They mentioned that French President Emmanuel Macron announced he would officially recognize Palestine as a state at the United Nations General Assembly in September, and stated, "We urge the United States and other countries to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state as well."

Currently, out of 193 United Nations member states, 147 countries, including Russia, China, and Spain, have already recognized Palestine as a state. Major U.S. allies such as France have also joined this trend. The United Kingdom recently warned that it would recognize Palestine as a state at the United Nations General Assembly if Israel does not agree to a ceasefire in Gaza by next month. Canada has also expressed the possibility of joining this move.

This is because criticism over the ongoing atrocities in the Gaza Strip is growing worldwide. However, Axios analyzed that, given the Trump administration's close relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the likelihood of the United States recognizing Palestine as a state remains low.
